Male Pattern Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia)Alopecia Androgénica Masculina
Male pattern hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia, is the medical term for common baldness. It is the most frequent type of hair loss, especially in men. ts prevalence and extent increase with age—it’s estimated that over half of men aged 50 and older will show some degree of hair thinning.
CAUSE
Men affected by this condition have a heightened sensitivity in their hair roots to male hormones (androgens). These hormones, particularly testosterone, progressively cause the hair to become thinner and weaker—a process known as miniaturization—until it eventually disappears. However, more than 80 genes are believed to play a role in this condition, indicating that additional biological mechanisms are involved.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
The first signs of male pattern hair loss are usually a gradual thinning at the temples or on the crown of the head. This thinning is often more noticeable under bright lighting, such as in a bathroom or elevator mirror.
Early diagnosis is essential to slow or stop the progression. This involves a clinical dermatological evaluation and trichoscopy—a specialized imaging technique using a micro-camera that allows detection of even the earliest stages of hair loss. In some cases, additional tests such as scalp ultrasound, skin biopsy, or blood work may be necessary.
Treatment
Today, we offer a range of personalized, safe, and effective treatment options to help manage hair loss. These approaches aim to slow the progression of hair thinning, improve hair density, and strengthen existing hair.
Personalized Treatment Evaluation
Advances in hair research now allow us to evaluate how each individual may respond to different treatments. Through a simple analysis of a few hairs, we can assess specific biological markers that help tailor the treatment plan for better and faster results.
Oral and Topical Treatments
There are medical treatments that act directly on the hair root, helping to slow down hair loss and, in many cases, enhance overall hair appearance. These can be taken orally or applied to the scalp in the form of topical solutions. They are typically recommended in cases of hormonally driven hair loss and should always be prescribed and monitored by a dermatologist.
Injectable Treatments
We also offer procedures involving the localized application of specific therapeutic substances directly into the scalp. These microinjections target the hair follicle more intensively and can enhance treatment effectiveness in certain areas. The procedure is performed in the clinic under local anesthesia and requires no special preparation or downtime—you can resume your daily activities immediately afterward.
Hair Transplant Surgery
Hair transplant surgery restores hair in areas where it has already been lost.
This technique has reached a high level of refinement thanks to micrograft implantation, which places individual hairs with precision for a completely natural result. Modern methods such as FUE and long-FUE allow for a minimally invasive approach and faster recovery.
